It’s Time to Check on Your Sewer System!

Along with all the snow disappearing and the arrival of spring rain, there is a lot of moisture, which makes our drains and sewers work a little harder than normal.  It’s a good idea to get these water lines inspected during the spring to make sure they’re doing what they’re supposed to… and that you don’t end up with water in your house!

Nobody wants to deal with clogged drains and sewers, but regular maintenance will help you avoid a sewer and drain catastrophe.  Most experts agree that drains and sewers should be tested and cleaned at least once every two years.

Bison offers dependable sewer and drain cleaning, as well as emergency plumbing, hydro-jetting, plumbing design, and a variety of other plumbing facilities.

How to Know If You Need Sewer Cleaning Services?

If you purchase an older home, you can get your sewage and drain lines inspected and cleaned as soon as possible.  Older homes have a lot of charm and beauty, but they may also have outdated plumbing and water lines.  They clog more easily than newer drains and gutters because they are mostly smaller. When making maintenance plans, keep this in mind.

Unless you have recently purchased a brand-new home, keep an eye out for the following signs of a clogged drain or sewage system:

  • As you shower, the water level rises.
  • The sinks take a long time to drain.
  • Any indication of water outside your toilet, sinks, tubs, or other plumbing fixtures.

Even if you have a clogged drain or sewer, by contacting Bison as soon as you notice a problem, you can prevent it from getting worse.  One of our plumbing specialists will come out as soon as possible to clean and inspect your drains and sewers.  As a full-service commercial and residential plumbing company, we also provide faucet repairs, seven-day emergency plumbing, toilet repair, and garbage disposal repair.

Is There a Difference Between a Storm Sewer and Sanitary Sewer?

One of the first questions we ask when people call for help with a plumbing problem is whether the problem is in the storm or sanitary sewage system.  Our licensed plumbers can assist you with leak detection and assessing if your problem is related to a sanitary or storm system, but it’s also helpful if you understand what’s going on so that we can repair it more effectively.

To start, storm sewer systems have two major functions:

  1. They start by capturing runoff from storms or melting snow and transporting it to nearby streams, wetlands, and reservoirs. This water is collected to help prevent local flooding during heavy rains or fast-melting snow.

  2. Second, they help to remove litter, sediment, and rain from our local rivers before it reaches them. While they help remove contaminants, they do not treat the water so whatever goes down the storm drain is returned to the water source.

Sanitary sewer systems transfer sewage to a wastewater treatment facility, where it is adequately treated before being discharged into a water source for a toilet, laundry room, or kitchen in a residential or industrial building.

If you suspect a problem, already have one, or simply want to learn how to better manage your home’s drainage, call Bison to arrange a visit to your home.  We’ll take you through a discussion of your choices and walk you through the local plumbing code.  Dry well repairs, catch basin repairs, storm drain repairs, and drainage system inspection, maintenance, repair, and installation are just a few of the sewer repair services we provide.
